Ask any guy worth his horological salt the title of an American watch brand, and he will likely spout off Shinola, Weiss and perhaps RGM. Others that are less informed may make the mistake of naming Hamilton, but they’d only be partly wrong. Although Hamilton is no more an American manufacturer, most folks still recognize the brand for what it was. Home-grown quality watchmaking. This longstanding, tried and true watch brand did actually have its origins way back in 1892 in Lancaster, PA later Hamilton bought the bankrupt Keystone Standard Watch Company Hamilton grew into a American horological juggernaut throughout the increase of the railroad industry, crafting railroad pocket watches but finally migrating toward wristwatches when the smaller timepieces occurred over in popularity after World War I. Their standing rested on the fact that railroad watches had supreme accuracy. Hamilton’s ties to air are one of the strongest connections it occupies, and also pilot’s watches are one of its hottest and longest lasting foundations to its line. They became the official watch of airlines like Trans World Airlines (TWA), Eastern, United and Northwest back in the 1930s. Then in World War II, Hamilton moved the entirety of their production to serve the requirements of the U.S. army, and they stopped selling to the public. Then in 1984, Hamilton became a subsidiary of the Swatch Group, a merger of SSIH along with the ASUAG (Allgemeine Gesellschaft der Schweizerischen Uhrenindustrie). {Hamilton now occupies a slot at the Swatch Group’s mid-range timepieces, along with the likes of Tissot, Mido and Certina.

Exactly one year ago, when Panerai launched the Luminor Due, it was well-documented that I wasn’t convinced about this new, second chapter for the much-loved Luminor collection. To come to grips with it and see what it’s like in the metal, I decided to review the Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic PAM674, which is the stainless steel, 45mm wide version of the four pieces that Panerai debuted the Luminor Due collection with.

The Luminor Due presently comes in either 42mm or 45mm-wide cases in either steel or red gold, with the 42mm versions featuring the P.1000, which is a good-looking, small, hand-wound, “3 Days” caliber. The 45mm variants, like the one we are looking at here, are powered by the still remarkably thin but complicated P.4000 in-house caliber, which also offers 3 days of power reserve but adds micro-rotor-driven automatic winding to the mix and about $2,000 to the price. As such, we are looking at a Luminor that retails for slightly over the $10k mark. All this noted, what I first had issues with were the name and some of the specs of the Luminor Due, so let’s see if these start to make sense in real life before we do our regular review run-down on the PAM674.

Luminor Due As In Luminor Two

Due (pronounced “doo-eh”) means “two” in Italian, so the Luminor Due collection carries the weight of being the second generation or second chapter of the Luminor, one of the most successful and recognizable (see how I avoided saying “iconic”?) watch collections of this century. Also, this is exactly what baffled me when I covered the Luminor Due upon its debut in May 2016.

In my mind, in line with product naming practices across any industry I can think of, when a product name has a sequence number added to it, I am led to believe it is all around as good as, or superior to the one that preceded it. This applies to cars, technology, aviation, household electronics, and pretty much every other industry. So the Luminor Due, one could think, is destined by definition to not only succeed, but also outperform the regular Luminor.

However, the Luminor Due offers a remarkably disappointing 30 meters of water resistance, which is measly for any watch and heresy for one that says Panerai on the dial. The Due doesn’t stop there because, like a true Luminor, it has the bare cheek to boast the “REG. TM.” marked crown protector. So, the question stands…

Can And Should This Be A Luminor?

With this major shortcoming noted, I’ll still say: yes, and here’s why. Panerais and especially Luminors are never really very pretty. Cool, masculine, old-school, dashing, even – all these things, surely, but pretty… nah. A pretty Panerai is a rare breed, even if they do get the proportions right a lot of the time. I would not consider any Panerai pretty, save for the two exceptions that enforce the rule – each a Radiomir 1940 in red gold: the PAM575 and the PAM513. The PAM690 in steel comes close with its terrific blue dial and neat case, but misses out by being 47mm and having a petite sub-seconds.

As you have guessed by now, this is where the Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic PAM674 comes into the picture. The PAM674 is sold on a black leather strap – the most boring strap in all of strap history and one that does little justice to the watch, though it is, admittedly, a nice back-up if you want to wear it with formal attire. So, after putting it on to ease my conscience, I removed the black strap. Drilled lugs are appreciated and, in this instance, work much better aesthetically than the large, screw-secured pins. The strap I installed is an aged, tan leather strap that truly transformed the looks of the watch.

All this was to describe the uncomplicated process that led to the following awe-inspiring moment. As I went back to the PAM674, now with the tan strap (highlighting the tan numerals and text), laying on its crown protector, I clearly recall thinking to myself, sort of in shock: “My God, that’s a great looking watch.” A challenge to imitate with photography, but a memorable moment that did very much happen.

Design & Execution

There is something special that its new-found thinness – a slender 10.70mm for the PAM674 even with the slightly domed crystal and angled lugs – gives to the Luminor 1950 case. It looks effortless, light and, even in this 45mm version, beautifully proportionate. However, I would prefer the PAM676 in 42mm, which would admittedly fit my wrist size better.

I say this pretty much every time when I discuss aesthetics, and it really should go without saying: aesthetics is something for everyone to make up their minds about on their own. But, what can objectively be determined about the Luminor Due is that it is one of the least intrusive, most balanced Panerai designs to date – and this, being a new take from Panerai, is finally something that praises the work of today’s Panerai designers, not those from two generations ago.

The magical combination of a perfectly round bezel and a cushion case needs no introduction to anyone who has ever liked a Panerai design, but the Due does offer a different take on the longstanding recipe. First, the bezel is very thin but, with its steep edge and relatively considerable height, it stands out enough that it doesn’t appear too small or fragile. The cushion case is a take not on the regular Luminor, but rather, the Luminor 1950 with the profile turning upwards and into the upper corners, rather than running into vertical lines. This further enhances that slender, filigree look, while the neatly defined (and equally nice-to-the-touch) edge that runs along the full length of the side adds some visual interest and a nice tactile element.

The short, narrow, curved lugs and the minute space between the strap and the edge of the case all appear thoughtfully designed and, again, the drilled holes serve as a nod towards the Luminor Due’s tool watch ancestors – even if this second chapter very clearly isn’t one.

Something I could not get bored of over the three or so weeks that I had the PAM674 was the slim crown protector bridge – and that, I understand, certainly sounds like a contender for this month’s coveted “Nerdiest Sentence of the Month” award. It completely transforms the look of this ubiquitous component. While the regular crown protectors I found at times were large for the sake of being large or just simply too bulky, every time I saw this one peeking out from under a shirt sleeve, I just had to rotate my wrist and take a better look at it. Maybe that’s just me, but something definitely ticked as this polished bridge sat so neatly nearby the complex corner of the case. If, for whatever reason, you want a similar Panerai without a crown guard, the Radiomir 1940 PAM572 is essentially the same (hands-on here).

Legibility & Wearability

Legibility is good, as the reflective outlines of the hands contrast nicely against the satin look of the dial. The dark grey sandwich dial of the Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic PAM674 actually has a very subtle sunburst finishing to it that is completely unnoticeable under low-light conditions and stands out only when hit by strong light at an angle. It is a nice, quality detail but one that will take the back seat next to other dial elements. Lume is good, though as is normal for non-traditional lume colors like this one in tan, the green glow is not as bright and lasting as it is on regular Panerais.

The crystal, like on most Panerais, is simply way too reflective. I have a theory that says this added reflectivity gives a subconscious, unidentified sense of enhanced “luxury” to those who know absolutely nothing about watches and are just going with the “the shinier the more valuable” approach. Given the wide popularity and market that Panerai is in, I guess this is a tactic that works. This noted, I genuinely cannot think of any other possible explanation – and I know even this one is a bit of a stretch. Still, the reflectivity of the crystal is so “good” that it gives a remarkably sharp image of whatever is behind or over you. You can see your face when you look at it or the back of your phone as you try and take a picture, or the individual leaves on the trees above. Under some lighting conditions, reflectivity is not too bad – it is in outdoor environments where it really becomes too much.

Wearability has been excellent, even if this 45mm version, again, is more ideal for those with 7.5″ or larger wrists. Because it is thin, the PAM674 does not get caught up on sleeves, it just slides under, which makes it that much more comfortable to wear. The 24mm-wide black strap was thin by Panerai standards and, with its tang buckle, easy to put on. The strap I ended up wearing with the PAM674, though, was this tan piece from Junik, which worked so much better with the overall looks. When buying, I would definitely ask the boutique/store to replace the factory black strap to something of this color since, as a daily wearer, this is just a much more vibrant, but no less elegant combination. Furthermore, you can always pick up an aftermarket black strap for twenty bucks or so to wear on more formal occasions.

Aluminum is a material that is broadly used in numerous high-tech industries, such as car and airplane manufacturers. It’s been long-relied upon for its relative lightness, resistance to corrosion and overall durability compared to other, similarly expensive metals. Still, it is a seldom used material in the watchmaking industry, primarily because it is very difficult to craft and also because it requires special surface treatments that render it suitable for daily wear. Aluminum is very soft compared to its counterparts and although it is light, watch brands tend to use different grades of titanium instead.

After a week of owning the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day, I remain impressed with the overall fit and feel of the item. This watch definitely was handsome right out of the box and place a strong first impression. This is my very first aviator style watch and also my first Hamilton. I will attempt to maintain my observations as objective as possible. My desktop with Korean watches is quite short… I own another Swiss automatic, a dark face Victorinox Officer’s Day Date, so a few of my observations are based from my experience with that piece, because the two of these watches offer you similar features. I purposely chose the silver face with brown leather ring to compliment my Victorinox. If I didn’t own the dark faced Victorinox I’d have chosen the dark faced Hamilton using all the steel bracelet… that observe is eloquent!

As its name suggests, the Khaki Pilot Pioneer couples this new series of aluminum watches with the theme of aviation, a choice that makes sense in a number of ways. First of all, Blancpain watches price in india Replica has an extensive history in creating aviation-related watches and it is no surprise that they are proud of that heritage, having supplied the Royal Air Force with pilot’s watches during the ’70s and created a large variety of professionally-used pilot’s watches ever since.

Secondly, most racing cars of today are made of carbon fiber and its different iterations, while modern planes still largely rely on aluminum in their construction. Above, you see our collage of the four versions, showing the different color combinations in which they will be available. Hamilton, likely utilizing the Swatch group’s R&D capabilities to tackle the task, developed a special metal treatment that allows them to manufacture the 41 millimeter wide cases in four different hues all the while also making aluminum harder and more durable.

This brings us to the primary reason behind the aluminum’s outcast status within the watch industry: it is a metal that is much too soft compared to its alternatives. What that practically means is that a watch – and especially one with a military theme – is destined to be put through its paces and be subjected to bumps, knocks and other impacts and hence it is more likely to show smaller and larger dents when made of aluminum. Even forces which would have left little to no mark on a case made of a different metal might considerably damage a watch with an untreated aluminum case.

The Hamilton Brand

Hamilton is a major jewel in the SWATCH brand crown. As a brand, they do a very good job advertising the style, quality, and American history, and how this influences their current products. When I was shopping for my first moderately priced Swiss Watch, Blancpain alarm watch Replica was at the top of my list. I’m a big fan of their products from a style/price standpoint, and during my decision process, I made a point to get hands on with as many models as possible. Getting hands on with a Hamilton is a relatively easy affair since they have decent market saturation. The Watch Dial

The numbers are raised about a millimeter off of the silver background and finished with a serrated/aggressive brushed finish giving these indicators plenty of contrast compared to the silver background. These raised minute/second indicators really make this watch special. The day and date indicators are black text on a white background and are cut into the primary and secondary indexes at the 12 and 6 positions. At the 12 position is the prerequisite pilot’s triangle indicator without looking compressed. The outer index has tick marks for the minutes and seconds, which I believe are painted onto the silver background.

The hands complement the pilot style watch and reach deep into the face making total use of the space provided. The hour hand is skeletonized at the tip allowing an easy view of the date window and inner hour index indicators, and the body of the hand is filled with a generous portion of Superluminova. The minute hand is skeletonized in the body of the hand, with the tip filled with Superluminova. The second hand is a long arrow with no luminant applied. All of the hands have a brushed steel finish. Note the picture of the lume and the lack of application on the outer index. The luminant works well and after many hours on my nightstand I am still able to make out the time, though, a bit of lumination at the 12 position would be helpful for orientation in low light conditions.

For as much as I like this dial, I think there is room for improvement. My biggest complaint is, not counting the Hamilton logo, there are three different fonts used on the dial. In such a small space, I cannot help myself from picking up on this font issue. Hamilton is certainly not alone with the multi-font usage, but since Hamilton is part of Swatch, and Swatch owns ETA, then why can they not make their designs more uniform? My second complaint builds off of the first, and that is, why can’t the colors between the silver dial and the day/date indicators better match? I’m sure it would add a slight expense, but making the colors/fonts more uniform would be a great way for the SWATCH Group to flex their supply line to create a superior product.

The Watch Case and Crystal

The stainless steel case measures 42mm wide not counting the crown, and the watch band lug width is 20mm. From lug to lug, I measure this case at 49 mm in length. The case and crystal together are about 11mm thick. The case features a mix of brushed and polished finishes offering a nice level of contrast between the two. After a week of daily wearing, I do not see a single scratch on a polished surface, so I believe Hamilton got this mix right with the brushed surfaces in places that see more wear. The crown measures 6 x 3mm and the crown guards do an excellent job of protecting the crown while still allowing easy access to adjust the time. The watch has a display back case that is a pry-off design with four screws for security. The crystal is sapphire with a slight dome. The crystal’s dome is so slight that it probably does not rise more than a half a millimeter above the bezel. The ever so slight dome adds a warm appearance to the watch dial and was a welcome and surprising feature that was not mentioned anywhere in Hamilton’s descriptions online. I added a photo of an extreme angle of the crystal to highlight the dome. I cannot comment on the anti-reflective finishes on this crystal… nothing is advertised, but readability, even in bright light, is easily accomplished, and glare is minimal.

The Movement

The watch has a ETA 2834-2 movement. Other than the Blancpain watches moonphase Replica logo engraved on the rotor, there is nothing special about it. Plain Jane, but functional. After owning two variants of the day/date ETA movement, I have to say that I like the accuracy, the ability to hand wind, and the snappiness of the day/date indicator changes exactly at midnight. The advertised 40 hour reserve is fine for a daily wear watch, but if you are like me and take your watch off on the weekend, then you will have to wind and set the watch again on Monday. This is a sort of ritual for me, and I can set the time day/date quite quickly at this point, so it is not a big deal. Letting the watch run out weekly does impact my ability to observe long term accuracy, but from Monday through Friday, I see no noticeable discrepancy.

The Watch Strap

Boy, this strap was stiff initially. After a week, it broke in quite nicely. Hopefully, after a month, it will be fully conformed to my wrist. This is the first leather strap I’ve owned, so I do not know what is average for stiffness out of the box. The fit and finish of the strap is quite impressive. The brown leather is quite dark, but it matches well with my brown leather belts and shoes. After a week of wear, there is no noticeable wear on the leather, so I believe that the quality of the leather and the dying is quite high. The stitching is flawless. An interesting and unexpected feature was the “H” buckle used on the strap. The “H” buckle design both looks sharp and works well on this strap. Sizing the watch is easily done, even with the double row perforation on the strap… the top of the “H” always slides right in. The strap offers quite a bit of adjustment, and should fit wrists 6 1/4 to 7 3/4 of an inch. For comparison, my wrist measures 6 3/4 of an inch. I do have one complaint regarding the strap though… I am afraid to remove it for fear of damaging the leather at the lugs. The strap fits so snugly between the 20mm wide lugs that there is zero clearance for a strap removal tool without prying (and potentially damaging) the leather or lugs. This watch screams “NATO me,” but alas, it will have to wait until this strap is ready for a replacement. It would have been great if the case had drilled lugs or a millimeter or so of space to work with at the lugs.

Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date Review Conclusion

Minor complaints aside, I think you really cannot go wrong with this Blancpain white gold watches Replica for an everyday-wear watch. At 42mm in width, it is a large watch for my wrist… definitely towards the top of the scale of what is wearable for me, but not overpowering. Day date watches are not for everyone, but I like one for a daily wear piece. Overall I am quite proud to add this watch to my small but growing collection. This year in 2015, after no new Navy Pioneer models in 2014, Hamilton has come out with three new Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer models: a 43mm Automatic H7771553, 43mm Rose gold plated automatic with a small second hand, and a 44mm Chronograph. This post takes a look at the 43mm Automatic.

The Hamilton ODC X-03 is unique and fun for the grown-up sci-fi enthusiast, but also manages to keep from becoming overly goofy or vague. Having a 100m water resistance rating, titanium case, and orange/black colour scheme it has the makings of a game watch but it clearly is not one. Considering that the brand’s well-known line of field watches, I like to imagine this is what a area watch on Jupiter may seem like. Hamilton is known as being one of the best value watch brands, and one of most reasonable ways for watch enthusiasts to obtain timepieces with elaborate grade ETA movements. Fans of the brand are always quick to correctly point out that many brands with much heavier marketing budgets will offer the same movement in a timepiece at two or three times the cost of a Hamilton. While Hamilton used to be known as value ETA, over the last few years, they have moved beyond that by offering their own calibres with mechanical enhancements. For instance, instead of all of their new three hand date models featuring the venerable ETA 2824-2, some new models, such as the 43mm Automatic Navy Pioneer, feature the H-10 movement.

The biggest advantage of the H-10 over the ETA 2824-2 is a longer power reserve; it’s almost doubled from around 40 hours to 80 hours. Similarly, the 43mm rose gold-plated automatic with a small seconds hand model features an H-32 movement that also doubles the power reserve of the 40mm Navy Pioneer models from 2013 which featured the ETA 2895-2. The 44mm Chronograph is also enhanced over an ETA 7750 by featuring an H-21 movement with a sixty-hour power reserve.

Aside from the longer power reserve, the H-10 movement is much prettier than those seen through the display backs of the basic Khaki models. Instead of movement bridges with a basic even finish, the bridges on the Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer Auto feature an attractive perlage treatment (a metal polishing technique using a spinning abrasive bit to form small, extremely close, concentric and overlapping circular lines to portray the essence of pearls).

Above are a photos comparing the Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer Auto 43mm to the 46mm Limited Edition from 2012. Even though the 2012 model was a manual wind watch, it is much thicker than the 2015 automatic model. The extra thickness of the 2012 model was a design feature given that it was made to fit into a clock mount that looked like the marine chronometer boxes of the 1940s (see photo above). The 2015 Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer Auto model, which is just under 12mm thick, still leaves intact almost all of the design cues from the 2012 model: the blued hands, slightly silver dial color, rectangular minute track, black Arabic markers, hobnailed bezel edge, and wire lugs are all there. Even though it will not actually convert to a clock, the minimal wire lugs make the aesthetic extremely clock-like.

The biggest difference between the 2012 Limited Edition and the 2015 Blancpain watches hong kong Replica Khaki Navy Pioneer Auto is the centrally attached second hand instead of a sub-dial at six o’clock. First was a pilot-style watch from their standard collection to be worn on the wrist of Cooper, and another watch that was to be custom-made based on very specific requirements. The Khaki-collection style dial is black with an aged type of lume and is beautifully symmetrical, as it does not have a date window. Currently, Hamilton does not offer any Khaki watches without a date window on the dial, and I have strongly advised them that producing one (even as a test) would more than likely result in very good sales, given how beautiful and legible the dials are. Inside the watches are Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movements.

Fans of the movie will be curious to know how Interstellar achieved the “Morse code” complication via the seconds hand. Hamilton informed me that the prop master was actually able to partially deconstruct the movement and insert a small servo motor to move the seconds hand as it did in the movie. There were no computer graphics involved in that. They were then able to put the movement back together again. The watch seen here is one of those watches, and it has some gel in the movement to block it from operating on purpose. You can also see the watch returned to Hamilton that was fitted with the servo motor – operated by hand to create the “Morse code” scene in the movie.

Those who know watches will probably be asking themselves “isn’t that a relatively old (though modern) Hamilton watch?” That’s true, actually, as the Hamilton Khaki Navy Below Zero (as it was more logically called back then – what exactly does “BeLOWZERO” mean, exactly?) was originally released in around 2008 (check our aBlogtoWatch article on the Hamilton Khaki Navy Below Zero watch here from years back). I am pretty sure it wasn’t Hamilton’s idea to include such an old model, but rather the wishes of The Martian‘s producers. You see, Hamilton has a nice reputation among movie makers as a friendly watch brand to work with. With that said, it is still up to the movie makers what watches to use – and sometimes they just ask watch makers they work with (like Hamilton) to create something unique.

The Hamilton Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO does tend to fit the interesting aesthetics of the movie, its gear, vehicles, and structures. It was actually a clever choice for the producers to pick, even if Hamilton probably wanted them to choose a newer model. As a diving watch, the Hamilton Below Zero (sorry, I just can’t keep writing “BeLOWZERO…” I don’t want to “be a lowzero!”) is water resistant to 1000 meters (with a helium escape valve and 5.6mm-thick sapphire crystal) and should probably handle the depths of space pretty well. This reference H78585333 all black “phantom” version comes in 46mm-wide steel case with a rotating diver’s bezel. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2826 automatic movement.

I hope that Matt Damon’s Mark Watney character wears the Hamilton Khaki Navy BelowZero (a bit better like that, right?) watch while trying to survive on Mars. If you aren’t familiar with the plot of The Martian, let me explain it to you. Basically, it’s Robinson Crusoe in space… on Mars (with, of course, all of Earth rallying for the rescue of one dude). There aren’t aliens or supernatural creatures. The real enemies for our hero are the cold realities of space, science, and the laws of physics. This is like the movie Interstellar, if an actual astronaut wrote it. Coincidentally, Hamilton watches play a pretty major role in the movie Interstellar.

So much of the plot in the book version of The Martian is Watney just trying to survive by using his wits, materials around him, and some super brilliant problem solving skills. Survivalist genre movies and shows are really popular, and in the scope of that category (without the addition of zombies), The Martian is an excellent “plausible” tale of near future survival on the planet Mars. So suffice it to say that I’m pretty stoked about seeing it.

Yes, the NATO strap thing – whether you love the concept or not – is a true bona fide natural phenomenon, and the watch industry is doing its best to cater to what they feel your needs are. The irony, of course, is that one of the major reasons NATO-style straps became popular is for their colorful looks, simplicity, ability to make vintage dress watches looks sort of modern and causal, as well as their dirt cheap prices. In regard to the latter consideration it is amusing to see how the luxury industry has dealt with the fact that most NATO-strap are about $10 – $20 each, and that the industry is used to selling straps that cost $100 – $500 each.

To lets get back to the Hamilton Pan Europ and these new versions that are available with NATO-style straps. The Hamilton Pan Europ started as a limited edition chronograph a few years ago, became the non-limited edition Hamilton Pan Europ Chronograph, and has now for 2014 added a three-hand version that I quite like.

Based on a vintage Hamilton watch from the 1970s, the Hamilton Pan Europ has a cool 42mm wide steel tonneau-shaped (barrel-shaped) case with an admirably sporty look and comfortable fit on the wrist. I am personally a fan of tonneau-style cases that have round dials and rotating diver’s bezels. Unfortunately, the Hamilton Pan Europ is a dive-style, but not diver’s watch, with its 50 meters of water resistance. The case finishing is quite nice, with a mixture of polished and brushed surfaces.

My final decision in my initial Swiss watch hinged between purchasing a Jazzmaster Day Date and the Victorinox Day Date. The Victorinox won due to the final price point, though after wearing this Hamilton, I think I’d have been more happy with the Blancpain villeret watch band Replica in terms of overall build quality.The Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date is a large and easy to read watch. I really appreciate that the vast majority of the watch’s face is dedicated to large easy to read hands and indicators. The silver background is quite magnificent. The brushed silver has an almost pearlescent quality. The inner indicator has painted hour amounts with 30 and 15 minute dashes. All these are in a comparatively compact type face, but are simple enough to read. The main index utilizes raised figures suggesting the seconds/minutes. The numbers are increased about a millimeter from this silver background and finished with a serrated/aggressive brushed finish giving these indicators lots of contrast compared to the silver backdrop. These elevated minute/second indicators make this watch unique. In the 12 position is the prerequisite pilot’s triangle indicator without looking compressed. The outer index has tick marks for the minutes and seconds, which I think are painted onto the silver background.The hands match the pilot mode watch and reach deep to the face making complete use of the space provided.

Hamilton has two versions of the three-hand Blancpain watch retailers Replica Pan Europ with either a metallic blue or gray dial. Over the dial is an AR-coated sapphire crystal, and the dials are both legible and attractive, with their block-style hands and sloped flange rings. One slight concern, as these are sport watches, is the relatively limited amount of luminant painted in the applied hour markers, but we haven’t tested the Hamilton Pan Europ in the dark.

Inside the Hamilton Pan Europ watches is the Swiss ETA-produced caliber H-30 movement that they say is exclusive to Hamilton. This movement takes a base ETA movement (I believe a 2836) and decreased the frequency from 4Hz to 3Hz, but increases the power reserve from about 40 hours to 80 hours. You can see the automatic movement through the caseback window on the rear of the watch, but it will be covered up for the most part if used with the NATO strap – not that big of a deal.

Due (pronounced “doo-eh”) stands for to “two” in Italian, and that quite clearly marks how Panerai is launching the second chapter Luminor case. Wow. The name of the game is thickness – or rather the very lack of it. The Panerai Luminor Due case, in some instances, is up to 40% thinner than the comparable Luminor Uno (no, they have not started calling them that).

Panerai is quick to stress, though, that “the ingredients for the new case are the ones well known to every connoisseur: the robust cushion case, large dial surrounded by the bezel (arguably not the most novel feature of all time), strong integrated lugs and the bridge-shaped device which seals the crown.” You need not be the most eagle-eyed of Paneristi either to see that the Luminor Due is heavily based on the Luminor 1950 case: it has what appears to be an extremely similar case and lug profile, albeit the aforementioned diet has of course taken effect.

The Panerai Luminor Due line will be debuted by four models, a steel and gold version in both 42- and 45-millimeter sizes. Let’s see them one-by-one.

The Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days PAM676 and PAM677 are the 42-millimeter-wide models – the references refer to the 316L and red gold versions, respectively. Both will come in 10.5 millimeter thick cases with the in-house P.1000 manufacture fitted inside. The movement, unsurprisingly, will provide 3 days worth of power reserve, operate at a most welcome 4 Hertz. Notably – for those who are eyeing the red gold version – the caliber’s P.1000/10 skeletonized version makes its debut in the precious metal model. We have seen Panerai produce some very impressive-looking skeletonized movements before (check this 10 Days GMT PAM624, for example), so this is good news; and even your run-of-the-mill P.1000 in the steel PAM676 offers plenty of eye-candy.

The dials, because they are always subject to scrutiny by the fans of the brand, are either black in the steel version, or anthracite grey in the gold PAM677. They have the classic sandwich structure and their top surface has been “enhanced” by a satiné soleil finish – that actually stands for “satin sun” and is in French, just to tingle your multi-lingo senses a bit.

The hand-wound 42s are followed by automatic 45-millimeter-wide alternatives with the Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic PAM674 in steel and PAM675 in red gold. Powered by the micro-rotor-equipped P.4000 in-house caliber, these also sport the claimed 72 hours of power reserve and the 4-Hertz frequency, while coming in at a mere 3.95 millimeters thick. The end result is a case that is unnoticeably thicker than the 42: the PAM674 and PAM675’s 45mm cases will be just 10.7 millimeters thick. As was the case with the smaller versions, the the red gold PAM675 will get a skeletonized caliber, in this instance, the P.4000/10.

With all this noted, we must return to discussing the case in a bit greater detail. The impressive thinness (for Panerai, that is) would have hardly been possible for the brand had it not had these sufficiently thin in-house calibers in its stable – so good planning there. The thinner profile also helps solve an issue that must have been on the minds of many Panerai Luminor owners: often coming in at over 15 millimeters thick, even if the watch’s aesthetics complied with more elegant outfits, they simply did not always make for a comfortable wearing experience with long sleeves. This new Panerai Luminor Due collection should remedy that issue and offer Panerai buyers an option that will allow them to pick a watch that sports their desired looks but at the same time lacks the compromise in wearing comfort.

Still, I feel there is something missing to justify the Due part of the name. Panerai has the Luminor 1950 and the Radiomir 1940, fair enough – and it is also understandable that they wouldn’t (and couldn’t) drift too far away from the Luminor’s very defined and much loved core DNA… And yet, a question (to be answered by every individual Panerai fan) is whether or not a merely thinner option justifies the chapter two designation?

Also worth noting is that although Panerai says they have designed a new case here, they have engineered it so that it only has 30 meters of water resistance. Now, despite the fact that the Luminor Due is certainly a more elegant (simply because it’s thinner) line, Panerai still claims that it has a “robust cushion case” and that “all the elements originate directly from the history of the brand.” A mere 30 meter depth rating – that actually more often than not equates to a watch that maybe is suitable for baths and showers and usually not at all recommended for swimming – hardly implies a robust design and construction…

Yes, we have seen Panerais with 30m ratings before, but what is the world coming to if the latest and greatest (and still technically rather simple) Panerai Luminor can’t make you feel safe wearing it during a swim in the pool – let alone in the open waters. There are not too many actual, measurable and comparable technical specifications that give watch brands a chance to back their claims with, but this rating will likely bother some fans of the brand – and we’ll leave many others totally unconcerned, of course.

The new Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days case looks every bit as refined and as Panerai as one could hope for, but when I think of what a new, 21st-century Luminor Chapter Two could possibly be, I can’t help but imagine something that is more than a new option that is actually less.
