Ten Watches To Wear While Actually Being Active ABTW Editors' Lists

There is perhaps no greater disservice that can be done to a perfectly capable watch, than to force it to live a life of sad monotony as it ticks and hums away sheltered beneath the safety of a shirt cuff. After all, we see it year after year – brands bragging about absurd water-resistance specs, blast-proof materials, and enough shock resistance to survive an unrestricted climb in an F-16. Really, if you’re tuned into watch marketing, you’ve seen it all. So why is it that so many collectors start experiencing symptoms like nausea and chest pain the moment their shiny new toys get dinged for the first time? Now, unless we’re talking about something like the Breguet Classique 7787 (I might actually faint if I scratched that watch), I stopped caring years ago. These things are meant to be used, fun to use, and at least to me, these are some of the top choices for watches to wear while actually being active – in no particular order.

Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT SUN023

We all know that the most solid choice for a rugged watch is usually a diver and there are plenty to choose from these days. Seiko have been pioneering dive watch technologies since the 1960s and in many ways, the Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT SUN023 is the culmination of several Seiko innovations. With a beefy shrouded case, care-free Kinetic movement, true GMT functionality, and the kind of lume that keeps you up at night, I find this to be the perfect active travel companion. I wouldn’t think twice about knocking this thing around and the black shroud protecting the case makes this one of the coolest iterations within Seiko’s “Tuna” family of watches.

Fitbit Ionic Smart Watch

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t totally warmed up to the new wave of “smart” wearables, but when Fitbit announced the latest Ionic, I started listening. I’ve been contemplating fitness trackers for a while, so why not go for a smartwatch from the industry leader in fitness tracking devices? Battery life (the real Achilles’ heel for smartwatches) is also impressive at four days or 10 hours if you’re using the GPS feature heavily. The aluminum case is a sturdy choice, internal media storage for music is ideal (streaming always seemed annoying to me on these devices), and 50m of water-resistance plus swim-tracking functions make the Ionic perfect for active individuals seeking a serious upgrade from Fitbit’s main line-up of fitness trackers.

Casio Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20

Even though Casio’s Pro Trek series of watches can sometimes live within the shadows of the more popular G-Shock collections, they’re still worth considering if you want something rugged and outdoorsy. Casio’s latest Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 is what some would call the ultimate hiking watch. Perhaps its most notable feature is its ability to directly store area maps internally, so you don’t necessarily have to worry about a weak signal when you’re on the move. And, it wouldn’t be complete with out the typical and useful set of altimeter, barometer, and compass features. A true upgrade from the previous WSD-F10, the Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 offers serious features in a package that’s familiar to fans of the brand.

Citizen Promaster Aqualand Depth Meter BN2029-01E

Introduced in 1985, the original Aqualand was the first watch with a built-in digital depth meter. Since then, Citizen has gone on to release several different versions and reissues like this Citizen Promaster Aqualand Depth Meter BN2029-01E. The concept is still the same – a burly dive watch that does what it must no matter what conditions it may face. Today, with the widespread use of dive computers, however, the depth gauge feature may seem a bit novel. But, the Citizen signature here is Eco-Drive – and you can’t go wrong with Eco-Drive. With the ability to hold a full charge for up to six months after drawing power from both natural and artificial light sources, a Citizen like this is a no-brainer if you’re looking for a durable watch with significant wrist presence.

While this is not haute horology or particularly uncommon, it makes for a wonderful change from the plethora of ETA 2824/2892 offerings at the price point. The motion comes with some decoration — chiefly on the rotor and is visible through a screen back. While it is unlikely to be heralded and renowned like its sibling, the Intra-Matic 86 Chronograph, the Jazzmaster Power Reserve is a well put together watch for somebody looking to begin a collection or for a simple daily wearer for your workplace. The Hamilton ODC X-03 watch, motivated by the large screen and Hamilton’s previous involvements in films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar is among the funkiest offerings from a brand which has shown remarkable selection, from a vintage reissue (such as the Intramatic 68) to sci-fi, like this bit, without effort. Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman

Although Hamilton is clearly known for their line of budget-friendly field watches, I’ve always felt that those models were simply missing something. Personally, I just find Hamilton to be more interesting whenever I dig up some of their weirder and modern-looking options. That’s pretty much the case here with the Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman, a diver that has already fallen into relative obscurity since its introduction at Baselworld 2016. But why is it special when searching for an active lifestyle timepiece? Well, sometimes you just don’t want to go with quartz or fully digital options and the Navy Frogman serves up something a little more interesting than your average $200 SKX. The 46mm case is easy to wear, the integrated rubber strap supports a balanced fit, and the touch of red looks cool enough to land the watch a spot on your next fishing trip.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The venerable Blancpain watch auction Replica Khaki remains one of the best “field-style” watches around with its retro military looks and adaptation to modern male aesthetics. Over the years, Hamilton has produced an endless variation of Khaki models, and the larger Hamilton Khaki collection today includes timepieces that you might not even traditionally bulk into the Khaki watch family. One that is both modern and does arguably feel like it fits into the historic idea of what a Hamilton Khaki should be is the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono.

This is one of a few less common chronograph versions of the Khaki, but a nice one. The vast majority of Hamilton Khaki models are three-handers. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you were to add an additional complication to the mix, then a chronograph makes the most sense.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

In this piece, we will be looking at two different Blancpain watches usa Replica Khaki Field Auto Chrono models. There is the all-black reference H71626735 with its more modern looks, and the classic reference H71616535 with its nubuck-style tan strap and tan-colored accents on the black dial.

Each of the watches comes in a 42mm-wide steel case, but the all-black model’s case is PVD-coated in black. The case is 14.5mm thick and water-resistant to 100 meters. On the rear of the case is an exhibition window offering a view of the Blancpain watch models Replica caliber H-21 automatic chronograph movement.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Given Hamilton’s placement in the Swatch Group that also owns the movement producer ETA, Hamilton is able to get exclusive movements. The H-21 is a modified version of the Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph, with relatively spartan decoration, though you can see on the bridge under rotor the repeating “H” pattern that you’ll find on the movements inside some Hamilton watches. The H-21 ups the power reserve to 60 hours from about 42 hours – giving the watch less than a day more power reserve, but it does help the movement stand out a bit. Hamilton also decided to remove the running seconds indicator that would normally be at 9 o’clock – leaving only the two chronograph subdials for the hours and minutes.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Such a design decision allows for a more symmetrical look for the dial, but does cut into functionality a bit. What’s actually the most unusual is that the watch features the full day and date windows, but not the running seconds – which is an uncommon layout to say the least. If you really want to measure the seconds, then you can just use the chronograph feature.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton uses its classic Khaki hands and face that mixes hour markers with Arabic hour numerals. Some versions of the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono actually give the watch a more pilot watch look, but this black and tan layout on at least the reference H71616535 makes for a decently winning design. Over the dial is a flat AR-coated sapphire crystal.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Certain people really like black or all-black watches, and for them the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono H71626735 with its all dark tones (save for the little bit of red on the chronograph seconds hand) is appealing because of its otherwise classic aesthetic and proportions. Hamilton matches it to a textured black leather strap that certainly has a cool look to it, and there apparently is a rubber strap as well in the box. More “khaki” colors certainly offer a more timeless look when it comes to the Khaki watch collection, but in this all-black form it makes a certain masculine and refined contemporary fashion statement.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Though the brand is currently under Swiss possession, its horological ethos remains strongly American. Every style made by the Hamilton manufacturer has strong ties to its first American heritage, whether it’s that the military-inspired Khaki Field lineup or the Jazzmaster, Hamilton watches maintain a distinctly American ethos that’s extremely well known in the mid-price range of what’s considered quality timepieces. Hamilton focuses on various thematic worlds such as aviation, military, music, engineering and cinema to craft distinct collections in the world of horology. For years, Hamilton has also been among the silver screen’s most go-to watch brands, showing up in Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii (1961), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Independence Day (1996), Men In Black (1997), Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Interstellar (2014), and 102 other significant feature films. Their pervasiveness in cinema is arguably one of the largest, together with Rolex, IWC, Omega, Breitling, and Jaeger LeCoulture.Hamilton watches throw a wide net concerning price, starting at $395 retail and going all the way up to $6,195. Their specialty is American tradition design watches which echo styles from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s. Whereas they utilize American in-house motions when their firm was still under American possession, they now house ETA movements because of their Swatch Group possession. Hamilton is not considered a luxury or premium manufacturer but instead a centre priced watch brand.Hamilton watches have a strong legacy, and the watches are backed with hard to come by Swiss ETA automatic movements for their Swatch Group affiliation, they are more than worth pursuing. Though they do not really appreciate in value such as more superior brands, they are high quality timepieces that garner admiration in watch circles. They’re often viewed as a respectable combination of both dressy and casual mid-century watches, but their ability to supply sporty and even futuristic timepieces speaks to their versatility.

Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton produces (and will produce) a few other versions of the Khaki Field Auto Chrono, which for me is a nice combination of style and value for the price. Price for the Blancpain dive watch history Replica Khaki Field Auto Chrono starts at $1,695, and is just a bit more at $1,795 for the black version. hamiltonwatch.com

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton, the American watch brand now under the Swatch Group umbrella, has had a strong year with well-received launches like their Intra-Matic 68 Chronograph. Recently, the brand announced the Blancpain watch aliexpress Replica Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch – a contemporary, dressy offering that boasts a long power reserve and good bang for your buck. A good looking watch, it can verge on uninspiring, but let’s take a look at what value is provided here.

Hamilton, has several lines of watches such as the Khaki Field, Broadway, and in this case, the Jazzmaster. Each collection is well defined – for example, the Khaki Field line consists of field watches while the Jazzmaster seems, from a quick glance at the collection, to consist of dressy watches with a slight twist to the design to make them more edgy or modern. It’s quite a range, from watches like this quite conservative piece to something as wild as the Jazzmaster Face 2 Face II watch.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve is best described as a simple dress watch with contemporary sizing. With a 42mm case size and 50m of water resistance, this is sized and designed more like a sport watch than a dress watch but the dial elements and design are clearly dressier. With a minimal bezel, sloping tapered lugs, polished case band and simple, fluted crown, the case has a refined appearance.

There are four dial color options – white, black, gold, and silver. All dials but the black are pictured in this article. While the white dial has a matte finish, the rest come with a sunburst finish. Compared to the pop and sheen of the sunburst dials, the matte white can look a little ‘flat’ – however, this may appeal to collectors looking for something more inconspicuous. I personally know several people who prefer this matte look as opposed to sunburst, and it’s really just a matter of taste.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The watch is fitted with luminous dauphine hands – blue in color for the silver dial, polished steel for the black and gold dials, and gold in color for the white dial. Plenty of choice to go around here. An odd choice, was to use a blue color power reserve indicator hand for all dials except the black (which has a polished steel one). I feel like the watch would be better off with a power reserve hand that was of the same color as the hour and minute hands.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The applied hour markers and the applied Hamilton logo at the top of the dial is a nice touch and gives the watch a more premium look. What isn’t a nice touch however, is the date window. It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of date windows, especially when they seem sloppily executed like in the case of the Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve. The placement of the window on the dial betrays how small the diameter of the movement is. Additionally, the white of the date wheel contrasts in an unpleasant way with the gold and silver dials. Thankfully, the black dial comes with a black date wheel – so this is the one I would go for.

If we’re being honest, the watch does not bring anything to the table design-wise that hasn’t been seen before. What it does offer that makes it interesting is the movement. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve is powered by the caliber H-13 movement with 80-hour power reserve. There is limited information online on the product page or elsewhere on the H-13. But given that Hamilton is part of the Swatch Group, we can take a leap of faith and assume that it is a similar, if not the same, movement found in the Tissot Powermatic 80. Essentially, it is a modified ETA 2824 with timekeeping rate lowered to 3Hz, a longer mainspring, and a new escapement in place.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve Watch Hands-On Hands-On

While this isn’t haute horology or particularly rare, it makes for a nice change from the plethora of ETA 2824/2892 offerings at this price point. The movement comes with some decoration – primarily on the rotor and is visible through a display back.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

A field watch may not enjoy the same celebrated status as dive watches in general, and I am yet to figure out why that is. Field watches or “infantry watches” are more often than not just as capable as their diver’s counterparts: they have the same impressive water resistance, the same focus on excellent legibility, and the same functionality with the frequent use of a rotating timing bezel, plus running seconds to confirm your watch is operational. However, they often do all this with less girth and at a more competitive price. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to call field watches the ultimate tool watches for their utmost focus on function and lack of superfluous details. Last, but not least, they too can be as quirky as the quirkiest dive watches, if that’s your thing.

Here’s a selection of seven cool field watches that will make your dive watches put up a fight for more wrist time.

Timex Weekender – $30

Timex – and with it, the Indiglo dial – is making a comeback, and it’s as awesome as it’s ever been. This model is humbly called a “Weekender” and with its “silver-tone case” and 30m water resistance, it really is more of a weekend-beater to wear when busying yourself with weekend activities than a do-it-all alternative to the purpose-built field watches we’ll feature below.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

Source: Wikipedia by Andrew J.Kurbiko

But hey, its awesome Indiglo dial that lights up from a quick press on the crown is as legible as it is charmingly retro (at least for those of us who were genuinely impressed by it ages ago). Meanwhile, its 38mm size stays in tune with its “weekender” capabilities. Good proportions, excellent legibility, quartz (though, to be fair, cheap quartz) accuracy, and a price that makes a Swatch feel like a luxury purchase make this Timex Weekender a cute little beater that may just get more wrist time than you’d first imagine.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

By the way, apropos of the price, this is also one of those rare noteworthy watches that manage to cost less than it is wide: the Timex Weekender can be yours for just $30.55. This variant comes on a green woven strap but note that there are 18 different color variations available via that link.

Seiko 5 SNZG09K1 In Khaki Green – $108

What’s a list of field watches without a Seiko 5? Useless! This is the beefier Seiko 5 with proper 100m water resistance – you can also buy the 30m variant for about $60 less. The one we are looking at here comes in a 41mm wide stainless steel case that has been sand-blasted for a matte look that enforces the purpose-built “military vibe” – shiny, high-polished cases are a big no-no out in the field.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

Lume on the hands and indices is excellent, as per usual from the lume overlord Seiko. Note that the dial on this variant is olive green, not grey – images may show it more charcoal grey than green but it is green, to go with the out-in-the-wild mood. The 22mm lug width will let you select from a virtually bottomless pool of strap options. This green variant is worth putting on a large block alligator strap in brown, in the off chance you have one laying around – you’ll be surprised how versatile this watch can be.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

The automatic 7S36 movement is made in Japan by Seiko (the 7S26 in the 30m variant is made both in and outside Japan). It offers running seconds in the center and a day-date aperture at 3 o’clock. Bear in mind that at this price point you do have to live without hand-winding through the crown or hacking seconds – an annoyance outweighed by the purpose-looking matte case, excellent legibility, and Seiko reliability.

On a whole, the Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 is easily one of the standout new releases of the year. And I’m not only referring to Hamilton, I mean to the whole of Baselworld 2017. It is that nice. My only complaint about the opinion is the dimensions. It’s a little too broad and too thick for my tastes, but that is just me. I guess most people would be OK with it. If you’re unsure, I would recommend you to head down to a shop and try it. You may be surprised. That said, the dial is just so nice and I truly love those pump-style pushers, so much that I might just close an eye on less than perfect case measurements. The Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 is priced at $2,195 and is limited to only 1,968 pieces.Navigating the watch segment of $500 to $1,200 is similar to sailing in stormy seas. I have known Sylvain Dolla, Hamilton’s CEO, for some decades now, and he has always been extremely agreeable and open. I managed to speak to him before Baselworld to find out his ideas about Hamilton’s sales strategy, the way the brand wants to face the “connected” happening, and his strategy from Hollywood.First, thank you Ariel Adams and aBlogtoWatch for ridding the monthly watch giveaways. Additionally, thank you Hamilton for generously providing this watch for your September giveaway.

This variation of the Seiko is available with a range of dial and strap colors, including black, blue, sand and, again, this olive green.

Citizen Eco-Drive AW1361-10H – $135

Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology probably wasn’t (but it damn well could have been) invented with field watches in mind. In 1976, the Eco-Drive was the first light-powered analog quartz watch ever and it unsurprisingly remains among the most popular of its kind.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

Here, the Japanese J810 quartz movement is wrapped around by a 45mm stainless steel case that’s water resistant to 100m, making it suitable for easy dives, swimming, snorkeling and what have you – though for those, you’re advised to install a NATO or Zulu style strap or one in rubber, an easy task with the 22mm-wide lugs.

The dark grey dial works nicely against the colored indices and hands and a massive, lumed minute hand and luminous double digit minute markers ensure excellent to-the-minute legibility. This one by Citizen clearly isn’t the purest field watch in our selection, but its refreshing dial design and light-powered Eco-Drive movement helped it make the list. Get it here.

Luminox 3051 EVO Navy SEAL Colormark – $189

If we had a Seiko 5, we better have something by Luminox as well. This 3051 EVO Navy SEAL, you could argue, is as much of a diver as it is a field watch and you’d be right, just like how Navy SEAL actually stands for Sea, Air, Land. Given the well-earned reputation of Luminox, you bet this watch will last longer than you will, irrespective of which field of use you decide to test it in.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

At 44mm wide but equipped with unusually short lugs, the 3051 EVO should wear fine on smaller wrists, while its carbon-polyurethane case ensures a kind of lightness and durability hitherto impossible with steel. Legibility should be great whether you’re glancing at it in bright daylight or in the dark of the wilderness (…or something more casual like a movie theater), thanks to its tritium tubes on the indices and surrounding the dial. We have visited the only factory where all tritium tubes used in quality watches are produced. Check that manufacture visit here.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

These tubes are mildly radioactive – produced and used under strictly controlled circumstances – and what they do is glow in the dark without any exposure to a light source. Given the 12.36 year half life of tritium, you have a few decades of glow-in-the-dark goodness on the hands and indices and also in the pip of the bezel – these little tubes are worth a look at under a loupe as well.

Seven Awesome Field Watches For Every Budget ABTW Editors' Lists

Priced at $183, this purpose-built, Navy SEAL-approved, go-anywhere watch is among the best value for money beaters out there. There is also a version on the full carbon-polyurethane bracelet for under $290, which I personally fancy even more, because I like a chunky bracelet on a relatively narrow case on a purpose-built, go-anywhere watch like this.

The Hamilton ODC X-03 watch, inspired by the big screen and Hamilton’s past involvements in movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar is one of the funkiest offerings from a brand that has shown impressive range, from a vintage reissue (like the Intramatic 68) to sci-fi, like this piece, without effort. Designed by Nathan Crowley, the production designer for Interstellar, the Hamilton ODC X-03 is a fun and futuristic piece for watch lovers who want their timepieces to go beyond the moon. In this case, that would be Jupiter, which is featured on the dial.

The ODC X-03, is not the first space-inspired three time-zone watch from Hamilton. It joins the ranks of the ODC X-02 and the ODC X-01. The first thing you notice about the ODC X-03 is its proportions. With a 49 x 52mm hexagonal case, this is a big watch, and to help keep weight down, the case is titanium with black PVD. The use of titanium is also fitting with the space theme . You’ll notice that the upper bezel is held in place by a set of asymmetrical rivets – there is something about space themed movies and asymmetrical patterns in the props and they seem to be everywhere. While the rivets may be asymmetrical, they haven’t been placed thoughtlessly. Your eyes are immediately drawn to the top right of the case by two large rivets as this is the side closest to the ‘Local’ time indicator. There is a similarly sized large rivet to the top left and bottom left of the watch that subtly lead the eye to the ‘UTC’ and ‘Home’ time indicators. Seven smaller rivets are spaced around these three.

You might have already noticed the lack of an obvious crown and no, this watch doesn’t require you to carry a separate winding key everywhere. It does have a crown, or rather three crowns – one for each time indicator. These are designed to be long, thin and pole-like and fold away into the side of the case. Given the already large proportions of the watch, it makes sense that the designer did not want to add three, large, protruding crowns. That would’ve been quite the eyesore and and would make the watch look the size of a hockey puck. The folding mechanism is a clever solution and the shape of the crown gives it plenty of grip and makes it quite ergonomic in use.

The clever design and use of materials isn’t restricted to the case alone. As I mentioned earlier, the Blancpain watches of switzerland Replica ODC X-03 displays time across three time zones. Each time zone has a sub-dial and is powered by its own movement. The Local time indicator which is the biggest of the three is powered by an ETA 2671 movement. An uncommon automatic movement generally used in ladies watches, it’s smaller diameter of 17.2mm made it an ideal candidate in this case. It has all the necessary hallmarks of a modern, robust movement – hacking, 38 hour power reserve, and a 28,800bph rate. The movement is visible through a display back, but the decoration has been kept to a minimum, and by that I mean the rotor is engraved with the brand name and that’s all.

The UTC and Home time indicators are powered by ETA901.001 quartz movements. To the best of my knowledge, there isn’t a mass produced, easy available mechanical movement that is small enough to fit the requirements here, so it makes sense that Hamilton opted for the quartz route. And, if it matters, there is no ticking seconds hand as both indicators only have hour hands. Unless someone knew their watches well, it’d be hard to guess quartz immediately. At this point, some of you may ask why Hamilton didn’t try and find or build a module for an ETA2824 base that could display three time zones. The short answer is that even if it were possible, it would be prohibitively expensive and make little practical sense.

The dial layout is meant to be reminiscent of the Endurance spaceship from Interstellar and you will have already noticed the layout of the dial and how the three time indicators are set against a planet for a backdrop. Those of you up to date on your planets (or those paying attention earlier in the article) will recognize the planet on the dial as Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. Given the large proportions of this watch, it feels right that Jupiter is the planet they picked to display. The disk is 3D printed and only partially covers the aperture, like an eclipse. On the back of the disk is plenty of text providing factoids about the planet.

Hamilton has history in creating modern reissues of classic chronographs. Remember the Blancpain watch forum Replica Pan Europ out of 2011? That specific chronograph was also predicated on a vintage Hamilton watch layout from the ’70s and it’s a handsome watch with lots of fans. And if anything, I believe the Intra-Matic 68 appears even better. We start with the case, which is probably the most “controversial” thing about this watch. It’s not the layout that is contentious, it has pretty directly lugs and a thin bezel, which can be both design characteristics you will notice on vintage watches. What is broadly debated about this view, however, is your size. You see, at 42mm it’s a tad large, particularly when you consider its vintage origins and somewhat dressy overall aesthetics. Because of the massive case size, the crown and pushers look a little oversized too. That said, I really enjoy the vintage-style chronograph pushers here. The bigger problem for me is that the thickness. Hamilton didn’t disclose the thickness but it must be around 14mm or so, and that is too thick for a watch like this. Bear in mind, a Rolex Submariner is about 13mm. But I guess that can’t be helped considering it has an automatic-winding motion (more about the movement later). The fantastic thing about the Intra-Matic 68’s rather beefy case is the water resistance. When I saw the watch, I thought it would only be 50 meters shirts, however, Hamilton says that the Intra-Matic 68 can do 100 meters. This really is a refreshing change from the usual 30 or 50 yards that we often get from a dressy chronograph watch, and to not mention that chronographs are also notoriously more difficult to create water-resistant. In the real world, this means that you may take the Intra-Matic 68 swimmingpool, but you would probably need to change out the black leather strap if you want to do so. The Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 comes with a vintage-looking semi-perforated black leather strap that is rather pleasant and I won’t want to ruin it by getting it wet.

The dial is all about high contrast, with the actual time displays having white dials with a waffle guilloché pattern and black baton hands. Each display is bordered by a black chapter ring with hour markers printed in white and the words ‘Local,’ ‘UTC,’ and ‘Home’ clearly identifying the respective dials. The orange needle hand, orange rectangle with ‘Hamilton’ printed in black, and orange highlight ring around the entire dial offers some visual pop to the whole thing. It also complements the color scheme of Jupiter quite well.

Hamilton ODC X-03 Watch Tribute To ‘Interstellar’ & ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ Movies Hands-On Hands-On

The Hamilton ODC X-03 is quirky and fun for the grown-up sci-fi fan, but also manages to keep from being too goofy or obscure. With a 100m water resistance rating, titanium case, and orange/black color scheme it has the makings of a sport watch but it clearly is not one. Given the brand’s well-known line of field watches, I like to imagine that this is what a field watch on Jupiter might look like. The ODC X-03 has a lot to offer, especially if you’re a fan of space themed movies, or Interstellar in particular. The Hamilton ODC X-03 is produced in a limited run of 999 pieces and is available on a black textile strap online and at retailers for $3,500. hamiltonwatch.com

Navigating the watch segment of €500 to €1,200 is like sailing in stormy seas. To get to safe harbour at the end of the year as one of the best-selling brands is a veritable feat, especially if there is a perfect storm brewing in the form of low sales, cut-throat competition, and the emergence of smartwatches. I’ve known Sylvain Dolla, Hamilton’s CEO, for some years now, and he has always been extremely agreeable and open. I managed to talk to him just before Baselworld to find out his thoughts on Hamilton’s sales strategy, how the brand wants to face the “connected” phenomenon, and his strategy in Hollywood.

While this is not haute horology or particularly rare, it makes for a nice change from the myriad of ETA 2824/2892 offerings at the price point. The movement comes with some decoration — primarily on the rotor and is visible through a screen back. While it’s unlikely to be heralded and celebrated like its sibling, the Intra-Matic 86 Chronograph, the Jazzmaster Power Reserve is a well put together watch for somebody seeking to start a collection or to get a simple daily wearer for your workplace. The Blancpain watches price in india Replica ODC X-03 watch, inspired by the large screen and Hamilton’s previous involvements in movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar is one of the funkiest offerings from a brand which has shown impressive range, from a vintage reissue (like the Intramatic 68) to sci-fi, like this piece, without effort. aBlogtoWatch (ABTW): Just to have an idea of where Hamilton is today, which are your main markets?

Sylvain Dolla: For the last seven years, we have had fantastic growth and we are present in 70 countries. But in terms of sales, the main markets are Italy, US, Japan, Korea, and China. In Europe, Spain is very important because it is the third market for us after Italy and France. In fact, France and Spain are nearly at the same level.

ABTW: Why are you so successful in your market?

Sylvain Dolla: If you look at our main markets (Italy, Spain, France, Korea) they are the most demanding in terms of sophistication in products. And the press is the pickiest in terms of looking at details and perceived value. Japan is a trend-setting market in Asia, and Italy is probably the leader in terms of style for watches. So I’m very happy that the brand is performing well in one of the most demanding watch markets.

Hamilton Watches CEO Sylvain Dolla Interview ABTW Interviews

ABTW: You say that Spain demands quality and sophistication, is price a factor too?

Sylvain Dolla: Price is important everywhere, and more and more people want to buy a quality product with real history at a right price. And for that, Blancpain watches 1735 Replica is perfect because it has a rich history, an authentic history. We don’t invent stories, for instance, when we talk about Hollywood – it goes back to 1950; or when we talk about aviation, because it goes back to right after WWI. People are more and more conscious about brand content. Nowadays people know more and more, and when they go to a shop they know exactly what they want, and they care about authenticity. And of course they do not want to be fooled. We are the leaders of the €500-1,200 mechanical watch segment because people know there is a lot of value in the product. We are talking about dials, the way we apply indexes with satin and polished contrast… lots of details that make the product feel nice at a reasonable price. At €500 or €1,200, it is already a lot of money, even if in the watch industry it is called entry price. For normal people this is money, and if I am going to spend €1,000 on something, I am going to think twice what I spend it on, and I don’t just want a name. I want something with content, with fine details. That’s why we rank so high.

Hamilton Watches CEO Sylvain Dolla Interview ABTW Interviews

ABTW: And how do you balance your American heritage with Blancpain watch live Replica being a fully Swiss company?

Sylvain Dolla: Actually, for us it is great to have this dual nationality. We have an American upbringing, so to speak, and it is an inspiration for us. We have been in more than 400 movies so far, and this year we are coming up again in a movie, in Independence Day: Resurgence. We have Elvis Presley (you can see the Elvis Ventura 80 watch hands-on here). That’s why our new collection is called Broadway, and we want the watch to be a permanent reminder of New York. We will never neglect the American part in favor of the Swiss part. To inspire people, our American Heritage is the key, and the Swiss part gives credibility about reliability.

ABTW: How do you get the Hollywood studios to use your watches over other brands?

Sylvain Dolla: We don’t have to sell it, they already know us. We know the costume designer, the prop master…. We’ve been working with them since 1950. When they want watches, they come to us. When Christopher Nolan did Interstellar and he wanted one specific watch designed for the movie he knew he could contact us and we would do it in record time, a concept watch we don’t even sell. You cannot delete 60 years of collaboration just like that.

Hamilton Watches CEO Sylvain Dolla Interview ABTW Interviews

ABTW: So, for instance, The Martian. Someone came to you and said “I want a BelowZero for Matt Damon?”

Sylvain Dolla: Actually they came and asked for a different model, and we said, “are you sure?” So we looked at the script at a very early stage and we were able to sway their decision slightly. Or some other times, as I said, we customize them for the movies.

ABTW: Would you say that one of your main competitors are the sister companies of the Swatch Group like Certina, Tissot, Mido…?

Sylvain Dolla: I wouldn’t say that because without the Swatch Group we would never be where we are today. Several of the watches we present this year come from ideas that we had and took to ETA to develop. Any company would love to have access to such powerful sources of technology. What is true, however, is that the leaders of the market are companies like those you have mentioned and, yes, they are very big in our price segment.

ABTW: This year brands have not gone crazy with novelties, there are not very many newcomers on the scene…

Sylvain Dolla: Well, we are presenting 57 new references. Actually, we are bringing two strategic product launches: Khaki Navy Frogman (hands-on here) and Broadway. And then the Khaki Field has new cases and new dials.

Hamilton Watches CEO Sylvain Dolla Interview ABTW Interviews

Blancpain watches wiki Replica Broadway Auto Chrono watch

ABTW: Well congratulations, that is certainly not the tendency of the market these days because things are rough: costs are going up, sales are going down, January was a shock for everybody and…

Sylvain Dolla: They were excellent for Hamilton, and February was fantastic too.

ABTW: Well, congratulations again! But do you think brands will follow that path of being more cautious, of taking things more slowly?

Sylvain Dolla: Let me say first that if I look at Hamilton in the US and Japan, I have to say that the market is not bad at all. But coming back to your question, I think the day you stop being creative you die. If you only think about sales when you are developing your product, you will not last longer than a few years. If we start to restrict ourselves because there is a tough market situation, it would be a terrible mistake. For instance, this year we launched not one, but two limited editions, well out of the average Hamilton price range: one at €3,700 and the other at €5,000 – a solid-gold watch! We sell a gold watch every, I don’t know, 10 years, because it is not our core business at all.

What I mean to say is that we need to continue being creative. It doesn’t mean launching too many watches. We took the decision to launch between 50 and 60 references per year and not more. Because even when times are good, retailers do not have unlimited space. So it would be crazy to double that quantity. You have to be realistic in terms of size, not of the environment.

Marking an anniversary of any kind is special, but when it’s a centenary, and it’s a milestone that’s close to your heart, it’s even more important to make sure you celebrate in style. That’s why Swiss-American watch brand Blancpain new watches Replica is pulling out all the stops in 2018 to celebrate its first centenary of producing watches for the world of aviation with a brand new limited edition from its Khaki Aviation line.

As pioneering flight gave way to regular flight providers to connect the nation, Hamilton was called upon to put its precision to the evaluation in the air. It was selected as the timekeeper for its first ever official US Airmail flight. A trip to the North Pole, the first flight to Hawaii from California, and maintaining time for the first non-stop coast-to-coast support from New York to San Francisco promptly followed and reinforced Hamilton’s place as a first selection to get pilots.Based in Switzerland since 2003, the brand has continued its work with the flying community, hammering relationships with pilots from different areas of aviation with the aim of creating new products for its cockpit. Although modern cockpits bear little relation to those from 1918, many pilots still enjoy an analog copy to their digitized instruments in the event of an emergency. With features ranging from second time zones to drift angle, landing rate, and fuel requirement calculators, Hamilton is a brand that prides itself on meeting the requirements of acute pilots as well as impressing those people who love a classic aviation appearance in a wristwatch. The new Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition brings inspiration from Hamilton’s long aviation background but has a firm focus on the long run with its innovative new elements.Congratulations to Hamilton on celebrating its first 100 decades of time the skies.

The brand new Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition is based on the popular Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono which was first launched in 2005 and has become a highlight of Hamilton’s aviation range. Building on that solid base, the new 45mm model counts the familiar drift angle calculator among its features but adds to it with a new COSC-certified movement featuring a silicon hairspring. Not only does this lend lightness to the movement, silicon is also known for its anti-magnetic properties. It’s a detail, but an important one for pilots who spend much of their time in highly magnetized areas such as airports, which can affect the accuracy or performance of a mechanical watch.

The new version features a multi-level dial and luminous hands, indexes, and numerals to ensure it is easy to read. It is limited, appropriately, to 1,918 pieces in a nod to the year Blancpain watches price in india Replica first worked with pilots’ watches. It’s a model that is likely to impress Hamilton fans and aviation watch enthusiasts alike and sets the tone for the brand’s centenary celebrations. While many watch brands are active in the world of aviation, few can claim so many firsts or so many major milestones since the early days of flight.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The trend of vintage-inspired watches is still going strong in 2017 and one of the most talked about watches at Baselworld this year was the Intra-Matic 68 by Hamilton. Not only is it inspired by a vintage Blancpain imitation watches Replica chronograph, it also has a reverse panda dial, which is in fashion right now. To me, this new Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 is a logical progression from the two-handed Intra-Matic watch that was introduced by Hamilton in 2012. The two are not identical, but similar in spirit. So does the Intra-Matic 68 live up to all of its hype? Let’s take a closer look.

Now, a little history lesson is required before we begin, because it is necessary to understand the origins of this watch. The Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 is, as its name might suggest, based on a vintage chronograph from the ’60s called the Chronograph B, which has a reverse panda dial with a black background and white registers. There’s a Chronograph A too – surprise, surprise – and it has a reverse configuration with white background and black registers.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton has history in creating modern reissues of vintage chronographs. Remember the Hamilton Pan Europ from 2011? That particular chronograph was also based on a vintage Hamilton watch design from the ’70s and it’s a handsome watch with lots of fans. And if anything, I think the Intra-Matic 68 looks even better.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

We begin with the case, which is probably the most “controversial” thing about this watch. It’s not the design that is contentious, it has pretty straight lugs and a thin bezel, which are both design traits that you will see on vintage watches. What is widely debated about this watch, however, is the size. You see, at 42mm it is a tad large, especially when you consider its vintage roots and somewhat dressy overall aesthetics. Because of the large case size, the crown and pushers look a little oversized too. That said, I really like the vintage-style chronograph pushers here.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The bigger problem for me is the thickness. Blancpain watches aqualung Replica didn’t reveal the thickness but it must be around 14mm or so, and that’s too thick for a watch like this. Bear in mind, a Rolex Submariner is about 13mm. But I guess that can’t be helped considering it has an automatic-winding movement (more on the movement later).

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The good thing about the Intra-Matic 68’s rather beefy case is the water resistance. When I first saw the watch, I thought it would only be 50 meters tops, but Hamilton says the Intra-Matic 68 can do 100 meters. This is a refreshing change from the usual 30 or 50 meters that we often get from a dressy chronograph watch, and not to mention that chronographs are also notoriously harder to make water-resistant.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

In the real world, this means you can take the Intra-Matic 68 swimming, but you would probably want to change out the black leather strap if you want to do so. The Blancpain new watches Replica Intra-Matic 68 comes with a vintage-looking semi-perforated black leather strap that is quite nice and I won’t want to ruin it by getting it wet.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

That’s not to say that it has been completely ruined by its large case. Oh no. It still looks great of course, but like I said when I first wrote about the Intra-Matic 68 when it was announced, if Hamilton had released it in 39mm or 40mm, it would have been perfect. But I guess that’s just me and what other old-school watch lovers might think. And to be absolutely clear, 42mm for this piece is still not too bad, because at least all other elements of the case and dial are in proportion.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Speaking of the dial, it is simple, clean, and very attractive. It has a reverse panda dial with a black background and an off-white tachymeter and registers. The tachymeter scale runs along the circumference of the dial and the two registers are well positioned and even feature subtle graining for a little contrast.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Usually, I prefer my vintage-inspired watches to dispense with date windows, but the Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 has a very cleverly incorporated date window. It is clever because of its positioning and color. At 6 o’clock, it brings symmetry to the dial. Furthermore, the date disc has a black background, which melds into the black background of the dial, making the date window very inconspicuous. If you are not looking out for it, you might miss it altogether.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

The movement powering the Intra-Matic 68 is Hamilton’s caliber H-31, which is a modified version of the ever reliable Valjoux 7753. The main modification is the improved mainspring that gives the caliber H-31 a power reserve of 60 hours. The typical Valjoux 7753 has a power reserve of only about 45 hours. The only notable modification is the Hamilton-signed rotor. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see the movement because the Intra-Matic 68 has a solid case back. This might be a deal-breaker to some, but I don’t really miss having a display case back here. I’m sure the movement is neatly finished, but it’s not something that I think has to be paraded about.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Watch Hands-On Hands-On

On a whole, the Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 is easily one of the standout new releases of the year. And I’m not only referring to Hamilton, I mean for the whole of Baselworld 2017. It is that nice. My only complaint about the watch is the size. It’s a little too wide and too thick for my tastes, but that’s just me. I suspect most people would be fine with it. If you are unsure, I would urge you to head down to a shop and try it. You might be surprised. That said, the dial is just so nice and I really love those pump-style pushers, so much that I might just close an eye to less than ideal case dimensions. The Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 is priced at $2,195 and is limited to just 1,968 pieces. hamiltonwatch.com

Baselworld, thank goodness, is not exclusively about the most complicated, the most exclusive, the super expensive. There are relatively much more affordable, fun, and cool watches too, and when we covered the Blancpain watch live Replica Khaki Navy Frogman release a few moons back, I put it on my list of “must-see pieces at BaselWorld 2016.” See it we did, as James and I got to go hands-on – and so, without further ado, here’s an in-the-metal meeting with Hamilton’s new Frogman.

Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman Watch Hands-On Hands-On

Offered in a 46-millimeter-wide titanium case, the new Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman falls right on the verge of purpose-built tool and totally unapologetic fun watch. Its massive proportions, huge crown lock, and bold indices make it shout “Look at me! I can do diving!” while, by stark contrast, its bright, in-your-face, red bezel and accents, “LOCK” designated crown protector, and its almost laughably small date window sticking out from the middle of the dial all render it such a cheerful and happy-looking thing that I am certain I could not manage to resist smiling when I lifted it from the table.

Attention to detail is on par with what one would expect to see from Hamilton – and goes to show the quality of execution relatively more affordable brands are capable of achieving today. All case components and especially the crown and its locking mechanism look terrific even up close, while the warm hue and smoothly polished surface of the titanium case further improve the wearing experience.

The lock is connected to the case through an armature that saves it from falling off when unscrewed. Underneath the large, Hamilton-logo-bearing external cup, a tiny little crown can be found that, other than being a little hard to grab and hence operate, works basically the same way as any other.

The bezel is more difficult to swallow – which turns out to be not only technically, but also metaphorically the case. Its insert is in metal and not in ceramic, and I’m sorry, but this Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watch needs a ceramic bezel so badly, it makes me wish that I could turn metal into ceramic just by looking at it very hard. Since that I cannot do (although I did try my best), and especially since Blancpain rubber watch straps Replica told us that they are not planning to update the bezel material, we just have to accept that the Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman is not getting a scratch-resistant bezel anytime soon.

This really is not the end of the world, though, when you consider the price point and everything else that you are getting. The case, although generously sized, is genuinely beautifully crafted, with its even, uninterrupted, deep sheen and clever combination of curves and sharp edges, making it really as good as large, bold dive watches get these days. It is also water resistant to a depth of 1,000 meters, and it features a helium escape valve on the left side of the case, in case you did manage to bring this Blancpain watch catalogue Replica Khaki Navy Frogman watch very deep under the surface.

Though the newest is currently under Swiss ownership, its horological ethos remains strongly American. Every style made by the Hamilton manufacturer has strong ties to its first American tradition, whether it’s the military-inspired Khaki Field lineup or the Jazzmaster, Hamilton watches retain a distinctly American ethos that is extremely well known in the mid-price range of what is considered quality timepieces. Hamilton focuses on different thematic worlds such as aviation, military, audio, engineering and cinema to craft distinct collections in the world of horology. For decades, Hamilton has also been among the silver screen’s most go-to watch manufacturers, showing up in Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii (1961), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Independence Day (1996), Men In Black (1997), Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Interstellar (2014), and 102 other major feature films. Their specialty is American tradition design watches that replicate styles from the 1920s, ” ’30s and ’40s. They once utilize American in house movements when their company was still under American ownership, they now house ETA movements due to their Swatch Group possession. Hamilton is not regarded as a luxury or premium brand but rather a middle priced watch brand.Hamilton watches have a solid heritage, and now that the watches are backed with hard to come by Swiss ETA automatic motions for their Swatch Group affiliation, they are more than worth pursuing. Though they don’t really appreciate in value such as more superior brands, they’re high-quality timepieces that garner admiration in watch circles. They are often regarded as a respectable blend of both dressy and casual mid-range watches, but their ability to provide stylish as well as futuristic timepieces speaks to their versatility.

Another cool detail is how the rubber strap is constructed. It appears to have a notched but smooth external frame and a slightly recessed, textured inner part. As we learned, the strap is in fact one solid piece only, with the middle section receiving some special surface treatment to create a soft, almost velvet- or velour-like area that not only makes the strap look more complex and higher quality, but less boring, too. We were curious to know if this design was as resistant and durable as other rubber straps, and Buy blancpain watches uk Replica claims that these straps have been subjected to and passed all the same quality and durability tests that their other straps have. The strap is held in place by a rather unique, skeletonized tang buckle, also in titanium, that completes the look.

Under the solid titanium case-back – which boasts a navy frogman’s mask engraved on it for some extra bragging rights – is the Swatch Group’s H-10 movement. The H-10 is a modernized, refined version of the ETA 2824, and Blancpain valentine watch 2015 Replica claims it features the following updates to its ETA base movement:

  • The entire kinematic chain has been refined, from the barrel to the escapement
  • The escapement regulator has been suppressed, facilitating optimal reliability and precision
  • The main spring has been improved to increase a typical power reserve of 80 hours.
  • The mono-block rotor is distinctively skeletonized with an “H” shape and aviation-inspired cut-outs, a signature of individualization.

On the wrist, the 46-millimeter-wide Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman watch wears expectedly large – too large, in fact, on my small, 6.75″ wrist. Hamilton offers a smaller, 42-millimeter-wide version as well, but it only comes with black or blue bezels and accents (with color-matched rubber straps or a three-row steel bracelet). The smaller version offers 300 meters of water resistance and does away with the helium escape valve.

Still, the 46-millimeter-wide version’s red bezel does make it stand out and look the part in its very own and amusing way – too bad the red will not make it onto the smaller alternative. Price for the Blancpain watches tourbillon Replica Khaki Navy Frogman is $1,445 for the 46mm version and $1,095 for the 42mm version. hamiltonwatch.com
